Official State Dog of Louisiana

Catahoula is the official state dog of Louisiana.  In 1979, then-governor, Edwin Edwards, named the Catahoula Leopard Dog as the State Dog of Louisiana.  The dog is named after the place where it is bred.  The AKC official website explains that Spanish explorers in Florida bred the Native American dog, which looked like a wolf but barked like a dog.  It was crossbred with bloodhounds, mastiffs, and greyhounds to produce a wolf-dog that has exceptional physical characteristics.  Later, the French arrived with their hounds and crossbred the wolf-dogs again, resulting in today's Catahoula Leopard Dog.

The AKC Does Not Recognize Catahoula

You might be surprised to know that AKC has not officially-recognized the Catahoula with the American Kennel Club.  However, Catahoula dogs have been in the FSS since 1996.  Part of the AKC's Foundation Stock Service allowed purebred breeds to continue to develop while providing them with the security of a reliable, reputable avenue to maintain their records.  The Catahoula Leopard Dog has been approved to compete in AKC Companion Events since January 1, 2010.

Catahoula has Three Lines

An article in Mom revealed that Catahoula has three lines.  The largest is the Wright line, developed by Preston Wright.  The dogs in this line weigh around 100 pounds.  Lovie Fairbanks' Catahoula’s were around 70 pounds and yellow or brindle in color.  The McMillan line is the smallest, at around 55 pounds and they carry a blue leopard coloring with unique glass eyes for which this breed is well-known.  These three lines are often interbred by Catahoula breeders to produce dogs that have unique appearances and different characteristics.

Catahoula Were Originally Hunt Dogs

You might be surprised to know that the Catahoula was originally developed as hunt dogs.  That's why you will often find these dogs do not get along well with other pets and people if they do not go through official socializing training.  However, if you socialize and train your dog properly, they are extremely loyal and a great companion dog.
